One of the most common problems for foundations is cracks. They appear everywhere! Ceilings, walls, floors, foundations, and basements all run the risk of becoming cracked. They are also one of the easiest ways to tell that you may have foundation issues. When your foundation begins to sink or settle, your walls, floors, and ceilings will begin to push and pull against each other. When the pressure of this movement becomes too much, they crack. And while not all cracks are a definitive sign that your foundation is sinking, it’s a good idea to have them inspected!
So what types are worse than others? If you notice certain types, it is more likely that your home or business is experiencing foundation issues. Keep an eye out for these types:
- Vertical cracks that are wider at the top or bottom
- Cracks that are in a stair step formation
- Cracks in beams or foundation slabs
- Cracks that are wider than 1/8″
